Fulbright Foreign Student Program
Enables Ugandan citizens to pursue Master’s or PhD degrees in the United States in all academic fields except clinical medicine.
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables Ugandan citizens to pursue Master’s or PhD degrees in the United States in all academic fields, excluding clinical medicine. The programme mainly aims to strengthen African universities through advanced degree training, though candidates from other academic, cultural or professional institutions are also eligible.
Since the programme began, about 399 Ugandans have received Fulbright scholarships. Each year around 5 to 10 Ugandan candidates are selected, depending on funding and field of study.
Who can apply
Applicants need a strong academic record: typically a second-class upper bachelor’s degree or higher for Master’s programmes, and a relevant Master’s degree for PhD candidates. Selection also considers leadership, community engagement and clear study objectives aligned with Uganda’s development goals. Applicants must commit to returning to Uganda after their studies. Applications usually open between February and May.
